The Waipara Valley in North Canterbury is Canterbury’s premier wine-growing destination. A privately chartered bus will leave St Margaret’s (convention venue) at 9:00 am arriving in the Waipara region just before 10am.
Waipara is home to over 80 vineyards and wineries with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc varieties amongst the local plantings. It is likely that the various wineries will be in the middle of their harvest and there should be some lovely autumnal tones in the vineyards. The tour will include stops at several locations with potential options including Waipara Springs, Pegasus Bay, Black Estate and Torlesse Winery – watch this space for more details!
Walk amongst the vines for a first-hand view of where the wines begin their journey. Behind-the-scenes access may be limited due to the harvest, however we will liaise with each of our wineries to gain access to other areas of interest to photograph where we can. You’ll be able to talk with the people involved and learn more about what goes on throughout the wine-making process.
Of course, you’ll be able to sample any of the wines that take your interest throughout the day!
The tour also includes a relaxed lunch at one of the wineries.
Our tour will leave Waipara mid-afternoon to have you back at the convention venue at around 4:00 pm. This will leave just enough time to freshen up, perhaps have a quick meal and re-join us for the opening of the National Exhibition.
Depart: 9:00 am
Return: 4:00 pm (approx.)
Please note, in the event that there are insufficient registrations for a specific Field Trip, we may offer you the opportunity to join one of the other trips or in the worst-case refund your field trip ticket.
Rest assured we will do everything to make sure they run, and we’re confident that they will be great experiences for those able to take the opportunity to join us exploring the greater Canterbury area.
